Future challenges of modern photonics will be in developing a silicon photonics ecosystem, improving data center interconnections, and the creation of common processes to facilitate the design and fabrication of photonic integrated circuits.

The common thread shared by Sant’Anna School TeCIP Institute (for Communication Technologies, Information and Perception), the INPHOTEC Center (for Integrated Photonic Technologies), and the Dutch company PhoeniX Software led to the establishment of a close working relationship to find most advanced solutions in photonic integrated circuits design and manufacturing.

Silicon photonics holds a great potential to be a cost-effective technology for the production of photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and to address applications such as optical networking, data center interconnects, signal processing, and biological and chemical sensing.

The INPHOTEC photonics center was launched in January 2015 and has now established itself as a national and European leader in this field.

“These are interesting times for silicon photonics. There are a lot of opportunities for this particular technology within in a diverse range of applications. Collaborating with INPHOTEC center not only fits our company strategy, but also contributes towards our common goal which is creating an easy access and well functioning ecosystem for our mutual customers”, stated Niek Nijenhuis, Global Sales & Marketing Manager at PhoeniX Software.

“Partnering with Phoenix has been a useful step for defining the workflow of simulation, design and fabrication of photonic integrated circuits and networks that will be fabricated within INPHOTEC facility”, remarked professor Piero Castoldi of Sant’Anna School TeCIP Institute. “In this period of significant competition it becomes fundamental to provide a comprehensive platform for internal and external users of the INPHOTEC clean-room facility”.
